OLD BRAHMI INSCRIPTIONS
of local adaptation. We quote below his statement in ertenso to enable the reader to judge for himself what it is and what it implies :
Janapada-niruttim nábhiniveseyya, samaññam nátidhāveyyati—iti kho pana etam vuttam. Kiñc'etam pațicca vuttam? Kathañ ca, Bhikkhave, janapada niruttiyū ca abhiniveso hoti samaññāya ca atisāro ? Idha, Bhi. kkhave, tad ev'l ekaccesu janapadesu 'Päti'ti sañjānanti, Pattan'ti, Vitthan' ti, Sarāvan'ti, 'Dhāropan'ti, 'Ponan'ti, 'Pisilan'ti sanjananti. Iti yatha yathā nam tesu tesu janapadesu saījānanti tathā tathā thāmasā parāmassa abhinivissa voharati? : "Idam cvu saccam, mogham aññan" ti. Evam kho, Bhikkhave, janapada-niruttiyā ca abhiniveso hoti samññāya ca atisāro.3 Kathañ ca, Bhikkhave, janapada-niruttiyā ca anabhiniveso hoti sam. aññāya cu anatisūro ? Idha. Bhikkhavo, tad cv'ekaccesu janapadesu "Pūtí'ti sañjānanti, Pattan'li, "Vitthan'ti, Sarāvan'ti, Dhāropan'ti, Ponan'ti, 'Pisilan'ti sañjūnanti. Iti yathi yathā nam tesu tesu janapa. desu sañjānanti “Idam kira'me āyasmanto sandhāya voharanti" ti tathā tatha voharati aparāmasam.4 Evam kho, Bhikkhave, janapada-niruttiyā anabhiniveso hoti samaññāya ca anatisaro. Janapada-niruttim náb hiniveseyya, samaññam natidhāveyyati-iti yam tam vuttam idam etam pațicca vuttam.
" The local form of a proper name is not to be dogmatically adhered to the local designation is not to be pressed too far. Such is the rule as stated. For what reason is the rule so stated ? And how is it, О Bhi. kkhus, that a man becomes inclined to dogmatically adhere to the local form of a proper name, and to press the local designation too far? Here, 0 Bhikkhus, it so happens that in some locality a utensil is known by the name of Pāti, in some by the name of Patta, in some by the name of Vittha, in some by the name of Sarūva, in some by the name of Dhāropa, in some by the name of Poņa, and in some by the name of Pisila. The inhabitant of a particular locality having strongly embraced and dogmatically adhered to a particular form of the proper name whereby the utensil
