Pancānana is generally known as Pāñcuthākura. The cult of the said god is immensely popular among the women-folk of lower classes of West Bengal for the welfare of the children and removal of the barrenness of women.
The work describes how king Suratha had a son through the grace of the deity. But he was much offended when he was totally forgotten by the royal couple. He carried their son away by witches. Afterwards when he was worshipped with due pomp and festivities, he brought the child to the royal couple. · Sanskrit books on folk cults are rare, but there is a MS. Bșhadrudrayāmala, i.e. a work derived from Bșhadrudrayāmala in the Government Collection of the Royal Asiatic Society of Bengal in which the cult of Pañcānana has been dealt with in detail.
The author was an inhabitant of the village called "Goda', situated in the western side of the Burdwan town. See Dr. Sen's History of Bengali Literature (in Bengali), Vol. I, p. 792. Beginning :
