Abbreviations used in this Catalogue.
Dr. Burnell's catalogue is the most important list of the Sanskrit Manuscripts collected by the Naik Kings and Maharashtra Kings in this Library. The numbers of the Manuscripts in Burnell's list are referred to as B. No. There have been subsequent additions to the Library Manuscripts donated by learned families in Tanjore and elsewhere. These are listed under the Donor's names and called after them (e. g.) J. L. No. for the manuscripts donated by JAMBUNATH BHAT LANDAGE. A number of manuscripts that have been left out by Dr. Burnell have been subsequently listed by Mr. O. S. RAMASWAMI SASTRI, a former Librarain of this Library. These manuscripts are referred as O. S. R. No. There are some paper manuscripts that have escaped these lists but have been included in the list kept in each bundle. They have been called 'number-less' manuscripts in these lists and the nomenclature is retained. Lastly there are manuscripts that have no numbers given to them and they are called 'No. Nil' manuscripts. But these last are very few.
