Kashmir. To Kashmir, Bhavabhūti probably went about 698 A. D.; for we find the inscriptions of that year of Lalitāditya that he defeated Yabovarinan. It is very likely that Lalitāditya took with him Bhavabhūti when his patron Yagovarman had been defeated. Thus the date of Bhavabhūti is clear. By 693 A. D. he should have attained soine fame or other, that would justify an enemy king taking fanoy to him and making hin his court poet. His date therefore may be fixed betwen 050-700 A. D.
Bhavabhūti was a native of Padmapura in Vidarbha and belonged to the Kädyapagotra and the Taittirfyasakhi. He was & dovotee of Biva..
Three of bis drainas are presented in this library.
These
are:
(1) Uttararimacarita (No. 1814-32) (2) Mahāvfracarita (Nos. 4484-39) (8) Málat madhara (Nos. 4648-87.)
About the Mahavfracarita, it my be noted that the work bas been left incomplete by the author, the reason being unknown. From some of the M88. preserved in this library, it may be inferred that Rājalekhara burnt away all the copies of the Mabáviracarita that he could lay hands on and that & portion escaped his vaddalism and that is the portion now preserved for us. One Subrah. madya another, Viraraghava and third Matturamakavi are known at present to have completed the missing portions.
COMMENTARIES.
