PREFACE TO THE CONTENTS
OF VOLS. VI & VII.
The Manuscripts ou Kávyas are described in Volumes VI and VII. The following classification has been adopted while dealing with the subject-matter of the various works concerned. It is widely known that the Raghuvamóa, Kumārabambha va, Kirātärjuniya, Sisupālavadha and the Naiqadha are known collec. tively as the Pañcamahäkávyas. These have been given the first place.
KĀLIDĀSA.
Raghuvamaga with its commentaries is described in Nos. 2779 -8044. Kumārasambhava, with its commentaries, is described in Nos. 3045-8094. It is to be noted that no Ms. of the Kamirasambhava in this library extends beyond the 8th canto.
Among the 2 commentaries on the Kumarasambhava described here, special mention may be made of the commentary by Narabari. Beyond the fact that Narahari is the son of Bhaskara we do not know anything else about the author.
Regarding the date of Kālidāsa, much has been already said by scholars, both Indian as well as European. Some place him 28 early as the first century B. C. while many others take him as far down as oth century A. D.
BHĀRAVI.
The Kirätārjuniya of Bhāravi is noticed in Nos. 3096-3184. A fine edition of this Kävya has been published by the Nirnayaangara Press, Bombay.
