“Of the Āpastambasūtras but little has been published. Dr. Max Muller long ago translated the Paribbīgā Section into German. Dr. Bühler has edited the Dharmaprāónas (Bom. bay, 1868-1871) with extracts from Haradatta's commentary and critical notes, and he promises shortly a translation which has been sometime nearly printed. Prof. Eggeling has long promised an edition of the Gșhye chapter. Perhaps, the most interesting section of the whole is the Sulba chapter, which treats of the construction of altars. This involves (as I pointed out in 1896 in my catalogue p. 29) considerable geometrical knowledge, and must throw much ligbt on the beginnings of Indian Geometry. Dr. Thibaut has recently taken up this subject, and it is to be hoped that he will be able to bring out an edition. The Apastamba and Baudhayana sūtras differ much in tbis respect, and a comparison of the two is requisite, to say nothing of reference to the tradi. tional diagrams for constructing these altars which may still be found here and there with Vedic priests, and without which (though perhaps sometimes erroneous) it is impossible to understand the necessarily great variety of bricks which are used."
The author of this work is Caundapācārya who is said to be the elder brother of Ādityadeva and Mañcapācārya, and the son of one Cinnāryā. He is again known as the famous Minister of Sri Virabhūpati of Vijayanagar dynasty,
