The text is an astronomical treatise by Mañjulācārya and the commentary called Kalpalata is by Yallaya, son of Śrīdbara and disciple of Suryaṇārya, who was the son of Baladitya. The commentator states in the commentary on the first stanza that the author of the text lived at Prakasa (said to be a town in northern India) and that, according to the language spoken in that town, Mañjula is the name of Surya (the Sun) which name is given in the first stanza. It states that the author was a Brahmana of the Bharadvajagōtra and that he composed this smaller treatise, thereby implying that he wrote a bigger work of
