A DESCRIPTIVE CATALOGUE OF
A well-known work on medical science : by Vágbhata, son of Vaidyapati Simbagupta. According to a stanza in the Uttarasthāna of the Aştāngasangraba of Vāgbhata, he was the grandson of Vägbhata and was born in the Sindhu country. There is difference of opinion as to whether he was a Brabman or a Bauddha The work is so called because it deals with eight topics or eight classes of treatment of diseases as may be evident from the fifth stauza thereof. The work is divided into the following six Sthānas :१. सूत्रस्थान.
४. चिकित्सास्थान. २. शारीरस्थान.
५. कल्पस्थान. ३. निदानस्थान.
६. उत्तरस्थान. The work has been printed with the commentary Sarvangasındari of Arunadatta in the Nirnayasagara Press. Beginning:
रागादिरोगान् सततानुषक्तानशेषकायप्रसृतानशेषान् । ___ औत्सुक्यमोहारतिदान् जघान यो पूर्ववैद्याय नमोऽस्तु तस्मै ॥
अथात आयुष्कामीयं नामाध्यायं व्याख्यास्यामः ---- इति ह स्माहुः आत्रेयादयो महर्षयः ।
आयुष्कामयमानेन धर्मार्थसुखसाधनम् । आयुर्वेदोपदेशेषु विधेयः परमादरः ॥ ब्रह्मा स्मृत्यायुषो वेदं प्रजापतिमजिग्रहत् । सोऽश्विनौ तौ सहस्राक्षं सोऽत्रिपुत्रादिकान् मुनीन् ।। तेऽमिवेशादिकांस्ते तु पृथक् तन्त्राणि तेनिरे । तेभ्योऽत्र विप्रकीर्णेभ्यः प्रायस्सारतरोच्चयः ।। क्रियतेऽष्टाङ्गहृदयं नातिसक्षेपविस्तरम् । कायवालग्रहोर्वाङ्गशल्यदंष्ट्राजरावृषान् ॥ अष्टावङ्गानि तस्याहुश्चिकित्सा येषु संश्रिता । वायुः पित्तं कफश्चेति त्रयो दोषाः समासतः ॥ विकृताविकृता देहा नन्ति ते वर्तयन्ति च ।
समाप्यते स्थानपिदं हृदयस्य रहस्यवत् ।
अत्रार्थाः सूत्रिताः सूक्ष्माः प्रतन्यन्ते हि सर्वतः ॥ Colophon :
इति सूत्रस्थाने त्रिंशोऽध्यायः ॥
