A hymn of praise said to have been a idressed to God Vişņu by Śiva in order to free himself from the sin caused by his beheading one of the heads of Brahman, as a result of which sin the skull of Brahman's head began to stick to Siva's hand. Beginning : वेदव्यासः
श्रीकण्ठः परमेशानः सर्वदेवनमस्कृतः । ब्रह्महत्याभिभूतः सन्नुत्तमाङ्गकपालभृत् ॥ शापमोक्षोत्सु(क)मजं (ना)भिक्षाटनवपुर्धरः ।
ततः कपालमोक्षार्थी क्षीराब्धेस्तटमुत्तमम् । समासाद्य नमः कृत्वा दक्षिणाभिमुखः स्वयम् ।।
तुष्टाव देवदेवेशं जगत्कारणमच्युतम् । महादेवः
प्रसीद देवदेवेश प्रसीद गरुडध्वज ।
प्रसीद विष्णो लक्ष्मीश प्रसीद पुरुषोत्तम || End:
स्तवनायकमेतद्धि त्रिसन्ध्यं यः पठेन्नरः । सर्वान् लोकानतीत्यैव विष्णुलोकं स गच्छति ॥
सर्वपापविशुद्धात्मा स याति परमां गतिम् ।। Colophon:
इति मार्कण्डेयपुराणे स्तवनायको नाम षोडशोऽध्यायः ॥
