SANSKRIT MANUSCRIPTS. VOLUME XVII.
CLASS IX-STOTRAS.
Stotras are generally eulogistic poems addressed to one's deity or Guru. They are mostly in poetry, while a few of them are in prose. They ordinarily set forth the nature and characteristics of the God-head or His decds in the various incarnations and often contain prayers to the deity. Most of the Stotras are by known authors, while a few of them are extracted from the Puranas or Itihasas. Namastotras and Namavalis are two of the main kinds of Stotras. The former consists of descriptive epithets strung together in the form of verses. The latter consists of a collection of separate epithets in the dative case, each epithet being followed by the word : (salutation). These are repeated during the worship of a deity while performing the flower-offering. The number of epithets in both these classes is generally 1,008, 1,000 or 108. The Stotras proper are sometimes prefaced like Mantras with an enumeration of the Rși (author), Chandas (metre), Dēvatā (deity), etc., and wound up with (Phalaśruti) an enumeration of the benefits accruing therefrom. Some of the Stotras consist of a number of Sargas and are in the form of Kavyas. They often embody high philosophic thoughts and lofty sentiments.
