On the Vrata which consists chiefly in fasting for a month commencing from the first or the eleventh day of either of the lunar fort night«, or from the new moon or full moon day, or from the day on which the suu passes from ono zodiacal sign to another. The fasting may be oontinued even for three, six or twelve months, taking milk whenever there is fear of logs of life. Beginning:
व्रतानामुत्तमं दिव्यं मासेनैवाहमुत्तमम् । शृणु पाण्डव यत्नेन ममानुग्रहकाया ॥ प्रतिपत्सर्वसङ्कान्तावेकादश्यां विशेषतः । यस्यामुपक्रमे(त् ) राजन् नैते(नात्र) वै पारणं भवेत् ॥ प्राणत्यागे च क्षीराम्बुपानमेव विधीयते ॥
एकमासं त्रिमासांश्च षण्मासान् द्वादशांस्तथा ।
उपोष्याथ व्रतस्येह कुर्यादुद्यापनं बुधः ॥ End:
मासोपवासव्रतमेव चित्रं यद्विष्णुना तेन जगद्धिताय ।
सर्वव्रतानां परमं पवित्रमुक्तं चमु(सम)ग्रं यमसूनवे च ॥ Colophon :
इति भविष्योत्तरपुराणे मासोपवासव्रतं संपूर्णम् ॥
