As found in the Aranyaparva in the Mahābhārata. It is there introduced in a discourse between Krşņa and Arjuna.
Different from the one found in the Rāmāyaṇa. Beginning:
आदित्यहृदयं जप्यं नित्यं तच्छृणु पाण्डव । अस्य श्रीआदित्यहृदयस्तोत्रमहामन्त्रस्य नारायण ऋषिः, श्रीसूर्यनारायणो देवता, अनुष्टुब्जगती छन्दः, हरितहयदिवाकरघृणिरति बीजं, ओं नमो भगवते वैश्वानराय जातवेदस इति शक्तिः, ओं नमो भगवते आदित्यायेति कीलकं, मम समस्तपापक्षयार्थे श्रुतिस्मृतिपुराणोक्तादित्यहृदयस्तोत्रमहामन्त्रजपे विनियोगः।
