________________ Shri Mahavir Jain Aradhana Kendra www.kobatirth.org Acharya Shri Kailassagarsuri Gyanmandir an anthority by the Smrtikaras of Utkala, Gaudla and Mithila. Jimuta vahana, an earlier Smrti-writer of Bengal has quoted 20 times from the Smrti-samuchchaya in his Kalaviveka and in another place he has criticised the views of Sankha Thara and other writers. Sarkhadhara is cited by Sulapani, Srikara Acharya, Raghunancana and other Bengali Emrti writers. Chande vara TE kura, ta greatest Smiti writer of Mithila belonging to the 14th century refers to Smrti-smuchchaya in his Gshastha Ratnakara. Vidyapati Thakura has quoted twice from this work in his "Gangavakyavali', whereas this work is aited once in each of the two works named 'Vyavahara chintamani' and Suddhi chintamari' by the Maithila Vachaspati Misra. Smoti-samuchchaya is quoted five times in the Kstyakaumudi by Bphaspati Suri, an earlier Smrti-writer of Orissa and is referred to twice in the Nityachara Pradipa by the famous Narasimha Vajapevi of the 16th century. Visvanatha Misra of Orissa cites four times from this work in his Smrti sgra-sana graba. Though this work was once very popular in eastern In lia, no mantigcript of this has yet been discovered. Sankhadhara who is found quoted by Chancesvara Thakura.of. Mithila can definitely be placed before 1300 A. D. SAMBHUKARA VAJAPEYI & VIDYAKARA VAJAPEYT: The two most notable Smrti writers of Oris a who flourished after Sankhadhara were Sam'shukara Vajapeyi and his son Vidyakara Vajapeyi. The biography of these two eminent scholars as found out by research is as follows. Both of them belonged to a famous Vajapeyi family, whicli was living in some Brahmin Sasana or village near about the sacred town of Puri. Their family surname was Misra and gotia Bharadvaja. The desjen ants of this family are still living in the village Danda Mukuncapur near Pipili on the Jagannadha Road which was fun.ed between 1500-(& A, D. It is known from the Kocalananca Kavya corpose:l by poet Gafigadhara Misra in 1615 A. D. that a branch of the family of Sambhukara migrated to Sambalpur where it received the patronage of the ruling Chauhan family and Gangadhara was a descendant of this eininent Smrti-writer, which is described in the verse quoted below: For Private and Personal Use Only
