assumed by the buddhi or Citta and the soul being associated with the buddhi by reflection, is said to be the knower. Because of its contact with the soul the buddhi is said to be intelligent and though the soul is pure, it is supposed to be the active knower from its association by reflection with Citta.' Thus, the confusion between the soul and the Citta is the cause of misapprehension, and there is a kind of imposition of false nature on the soul of being active and participating in the various activities, when the fact is quite contrary to it. The Puruşa is in its original nature passive and immutable. The example that is cited in the above passage is exactly applicable here; though the reflections of the sun are seen to be moving in moving water it does not at all mean that the sun itself moves. Max Müller also explains the position of Samkhya and Yoga in this respect, in the following passage — "What he means is that in the Sāṁkhya the Purusa is never a real maker or an agent. He simply reflects on Praksti, or the products of Praksti are reflected on him; and as anything reflected in a crystal or a mirror seems to move when the mirror is moved, though it remains all the tiine quite unmoved; thus the Puruşa also seems to move and to be an agent, while what is really moving, changing, or being created is Praksti."2 The Citta in itself, is unintelligent. It cannot know the objects unless it is associated with the soul which alone reveals the
