________________ Shri Mahavir Jain Aradhana Kendra www.kobatirth.org Acharya Shri Kailashsagarsuri Gyanmandir Buddhism 213 this respect in the following manner —"For, although Buddha appears as Teacher and Deliverer of mankind, yet the salvation of each individual is entirely dependent on his own self. Buddha shows the way and necessary attitude, but does not himself interfere with the process of salvation or liberation. In the same sense it is true that one may entirely think away the person of Buddha without Buddhist teaching ceasing in any way to be all that it has ever been.” 1 Buddhism stresses the need of cultivating the moral virtues to reach the final state of Nirvāṇa. The practice of moral life totally transforms one's being from within and from without, and thus, one becomes a renunciate in the real sense. Rhys Davids says --"The Buddhist salvation was held to consist in a change of heart, a modification of personal character to be attained to in this world."2 The actual living of moral life is absolutely necessary for one who seeks Nirvāņa. It is the very precondition for the attainment of Nirvāņa. Buddhism emphasises the need of right knowledge and right practice of those moral principles for being fit to experience the state of Nirvāga. Buddhism prescribed the noble eightfold path (ariyo atěhāngiko Mágga). The eightfold path leading to the attainment of Nirvāņa consists in the following eight things :(1)Right views, Schayer Stanislav : Mahāyāna Doctrine of Salvation, p. 17.
