________________ Shri Mahavir Jain Aradhana Kendra www.kobatirth.org Acharya Shri Kailashsagarsuri Gyanmandir Buddhism 163 therefore, let not the wise man create upādhi, consi. dering (that this is) the birth and origin of pain." Thus, ignorance acts as the primary cause of all Klesas and their consequent sorrow. The Buddhists give a long causal series of sorrow. Suzuki gives the full causal chain as follows -- The doctrine of nescience or ignorance is technically expressed in the following formula, which is, commonly called the Twelve Nidānas or Pratyayasamutpada, that is to say chain of Dependence. (1) There is Ignorance (avidyā prael) in the beginning (2) from ignorance action comes forth (3) from action comes forth consciousness (vijñāna fasta) (4) from consciousness name and from (5) form Name-and-Form the six organs (sadāyatana tera) (6) from the six organs Touch (sparsa Fazf) (7) from touch-sensation (vedanā alcal) (8) from sensation-desire (trsņā gum) (9) from the desire clinging, (10) from clingingBeing (bhava na) (11) from Being Birth (jati sla) (12) from birth pain-duḥkha (5:). We find the same causal chain in the Digha Nikāya which states that from avidya (nescience) arise saṁskāra (acts), from acts vij iāna (consciousness ), from consciousness (Name-and-Form) Námarūpa, from Name-andForm saņāyatana (the six organs), from the six organs spars'a (touch), from touch (sensation ) vedanā, from sensation trsņā (desire), from desire (upādāna) clinging, from clinging Bhava (Being), from Being jāti Birth and from Birth jarămaraņa (old age and death) 1 Faüsbäll (Tr.): Sutta Nipāta (The Sucred Books of the East), 19+. p. 1050.
