FOREWORD
Dr. P. M. Mehta
M. D., M. S., F. C. P. S., F. I. C. S. Director Central Institute of Research in Indigenous Systems of
Medicine-Jam Nagar. Independence of India has given very favourable atmosphere for full development of Ayurvedic Educational Institutions.
This opportunity has created urgent need of solving two problems to fulfil this cherished goal. These two problems are to have good teachers and good text-books.
The problems of Text-books is to be solved from two aspects. The first is to have standard authoritative text-books on Ayurvedic subjects. The ancient classics were encyclopedic and the modern trend is to teach subject-wise; hence new all-comprehensive compilation shall have to be done. The second is to translate all existing modern medical literature to make it available for comparative study and references to the Ayurvedic scholars.
The difficulty in this task is great as there is no standard dictionary availble that gives exact meaning and full accurate information about the things that words symbolize. Confusion already exists in the meaning and hectic efforts done at random have confounded it still more. Overenthusiasm spirit in some to prove that every modern concept and subject existed in ancient period has so distorted translation and misconstrued interpretations that it will need additional time to undo them. These are the present circumstances.
But we cannot wait for an undated future to: prepare the text-books as the need is so urgent.
