Preface
All independent works have been arranged alphabetically according to their Sanskrit titles whereas the commentaries pertaining to them are arranged chronologically as far as possible.
Especially in the beginning I had to copy extracts from the Jaina Mis Later on I was assisted in this work at a time by one or two of the following persons employed by the Institute:
Messrs. 'D. V. Shintre, M. M. Patkar, G. V. Gulavani, G. S. Deshmukh, B. M. Deo and S. N. Savadi.
Their assistance proved fruiiful after my acquainting them with the Jaina Nāgari characters in special. · In this connection I may note that the work of Mr. S. N.. Savadi was particularly commendable.
Addenda given here does not belong only to this Part I of Sec. II of Vol. XIX but it pertains to even 'portions of the Jaina Catalogue of Mss. so far published. This is due to the fact that () the printing of the Jaina Catalogue has been going on very very slowly, ( 2 ) some works have been published during the years 1957 to 1965 and (3) some discrepancies-have been casually noticed.
This Part I cf Section II of Vol. XIX opens a new vista, for it presents narratives, altogether a new branch of the non-canonical literature, the canonical one having been treated by me in Vol. XVII. Other branches of the non-canopical literature are: -
(i) Philosophy, (ii) hymnology and (iii) riiualism etc.;
A portion of philosophical works is published as Part I of Vol. XVIII and hymnology as Parts I and II or Section 1 of Vol. XIX.:,:
Section Il of Vol. XIX consists of works of both the sects of the Jainas viz. Śvetām bara and Digambara. As already stated its first two parts will include only Śvetämbara narratives and their corresponding Appendices whereas the third, Digambara ones and ten appendices pertaining to them. 1 These portions are as under :
Vol. XVII, Pts. I-V; Vol. XVIII, Pt. 1 and Vol. XIX, Soc. I, Pts. 1--2. As regards errata' only this Part I is conoerued,
