The present catalogue is based on the tabulated forms giving details such as title, author/comm., Extent-folios, Granthas, size, subject etc. of each entry of manuscript. It has 17 columns. We invited local Sanskrit scholars and Pandits on the part-time basis to prepare these forms by consulting and carefully scrutinizing each and every Mss. For this purpose we have received financial assistance of the scheme of the Department of Culture, Government of India, New Delhi in year 1982. There is every possibility of some thing lacking in entering the information. While compiling the catalogue wherever we find some incorrect data or any doubts, we have checked the manuscript but it was not feasible to check every entry of the manuscript. Still we made efforts to verify the entries as far as possible.
First of all these tabulated forms were sorted out according to the subject and then they were arranged alphabetically. While doing this task we faced many difficulties such as the incorrectness of the title, subjects, one work having two or more names, the size of the Ms., Nos. of. folios, dates and age of composition. The common mistake occurring in the forms was the entry of Date of composition of the same work entered wrongly in column of the Age which we were required to correct.
Though we have followed the subjectwise arrangement of all the entries of Mss. of all the subjects as per our previous Vols. We could not follow the same in the case of Jaina manuscripts which were classified into sub-subjects such as Agama, Dharmaśāstra, stotra etc. as it was done in the II Vol. of the catalogue. They are listed alphabetically like the other subjects which we think will be convenient to the scholars. As Jaina Mss. were large in number it was not easy for us to detect the definite subject of each Jaina entry as we are not so familiar with that subject. Still with our megre knowledge of Jainism and with the help of other Jaina catalogues we have tried to give the subject of each entry in the column of Remarks. It is to be noted here that this was done only for Jaina manuscripts. Most of these Jaina manuscripts are very small works having one or two folios and are mostly Stotra or Rāsa or Sajjayas works.
