of the Pāli thinamiddha (BSKt. styānamiddha) with the original of the Jain Skt. and Pkt. compound quoted. It is an ancient, inherited word (or 'concept'). It is probably older than Buddhism, certainly older than the oldest Buddhist canonical texts, as is shown by its frequence and confirmed by the Jain parallels.

Pp. 256-258. How did the change over from tadi to tāyi take place ? Here the Jain Prākrit texts come to help The word 'tayi' or "tai' in Jain Prākrit texts is used constantly and it is used in almost the same sense as Pāli tādi'. It is used with reference to Mahāvīra himself as well as with reference to 'one who is as holy as the Great Teacher, a Monk'. It is perhaps due to the Jain infiuence that the word in its Prākrit form came to be used and known even in Buddhist circles, and that is perhaps the reason why the form tāyi came to be used by the Buddhist Sanskrit writers.
