(Padhamam nanam tao daya).3 Compassion follows from gnosis in the same way as heat follows from fire. Hence being-in-self-consciousness or dharma is manifested in the following virtues -
1) Forgiveness (Ksma):
When one is out of oneself, one has anger. Contrariwise, in the state of enlightenment, there is forgiveness (Ksma). The man of settied intelligence is naturally forgiving. Ordinarily, we believe that the external objects are the causes of anger, but, in fact, the source of anger is within; the external object is only an occasion for its outburst. One who is silenced from within, is nid of egoism, and hence, for him, there is no occasion for being angry with anybody, Even the external occasions for anger, does not make him angry, for he has compassion. According to Amrit Chandracharya, "Even when there are occasions for anger, but inspite of that, if one does not have the evil tendencies of comlaint and hurting others in the self, one is said to be in the state of forgiveness." In the Kartikeyanupreksha it is said, "one who does not have anger inspite of being tortured by angels, human beings and animals, have purity of heart and forgiveness of soul."6 All the great souls of the universe, who are the salt of the earth, have shown such type of forgivenesss towards the assailants. Jesus' last words for them who tortured and crucified him, were. 'Father, Forgive them; for they know not what they do". ? Lord Mahavira himself had to face many ordeals during his sadhana; he was tortured in so many ways, but he was even amidst all odds and maintained the attitude of forgiveness.
Anger begets enemity; forgiveness fosters friendship. Unless one is completely rid of anger, one cannot be friendly to the entire universe. The source of friendliness is the complete eradication of anger. "Charity begins at home'. Thus those who want to be friendly to others, should cleanse their souls first, of all its dross and defilements. Hence Lord Mahavira said, "I forgiva all beings, and all beings may forgive me. I have friendship with the entire universe, and enemity with none.'S
According to Lord Mahavira, anger is doubly pernicious. It not only affects those towards which it is directed, but it also affects those who harbour
