________________ Jainism as a World Religion 119 the earth. Hence either we adopt a life of plain living and high thinking or face ecological disaster, which will be more dreadful than the nuclear winter. Non-violence is incomplete without voluntary curb on our extravagance. In fact non-violence and simple living and limited possession go together. Jainism finds a pattern, a rhythm and purpose in history. The progress of civilization can not be deined in terms of material progress but in terms of moral progress "Rome suffered a moral fall when it attained high material affluence. So did egypt and so perhaps most countries of which we have any historical record. The descendants and kinsmen of the royal and divine Krsna too felt when they were rolling in riches". The Jainas had foreseen these dangers and therefore, had emphasised the ideal of non-possession and the practice of voluntary limitation of wants. The twentieth century has been the century of Science, the 21st century will be a century of the synthesis of science and spirituality. In Jainism, science and spirituality as well as non-violence and religion meet together. References 1. himsappa sūtăim duhāi mastā. Sūtrakrtānga sūtra, Editor Madhukar Muni, APS. Vyavara. 1.10.21.
