Ašțāņkaņa Astāngaņa It is not the place here to enter into a discussion on the names of countries; it seems that Nitiv. s. 10 is interpolated and the Commentary has versified the text or quoted the original source from which also the interpolation has taken her wisdom. It is this versified nearly verbatim interpretation of the sūtras which lead the reader to the conclusion that the quotations are taken either from the same source as the sūtras or, they have been versified by the Commentator himself. p. 132 on 10, 87 Nitiv. runs: बुद्धावर्थे युद्धे च ये सहायास्ते कार्यपुरुषाः । The Commentator ascribes the following sloka to Saunaka.
मोहे यच्छन्ति ये बुद्धिमर्थे कृच्छ्रे तथा धनम् ।
वैरिसंघे सहायत्वं ते कार्यपुरुषा मताः ॥ Or, p. 65 on 5, 73: नीलीरक्ते वस्त्र इव को नाम दुर्विदग्धे राशि रागान्तरमाधत्ते the Tika quotes from Narada:
. दुर्विदग्धस्य भूपस्य भावः शक्येत नान्यथा ।
कर्तुं वर्णोऽत्र यद्वच्च नीलीरक्तस्य वाससः ॥ __Or, p. 221 on 24, 4: चित्तविकृते स्त्यविषयः किन्न भवति मातापि राक्षसी, Sukra says according to the Commentary:
यस्य चित्ते विकारः स्यात् सर्व पापं करोति सः ।
जातं हन्ति सुखं माता शाकिनीमार्गमाश्रिता ॥ Lastly, Somadeva says p. 245 ( 24, 73 ); आप्तविद्यावृद्धोपरुद्धाः सुखोपरुद्धाश्च राजपुत्राः पितरं नाभिद्रुह्यन्ति । The Commentary quotes Gautama thereon:
__ आप्तैर्विद्याधिकैर्येऽत्र राजपुत्राः सुरक्षिताः ।
वृद्धिं गताश्च सौख्येन जनकं न द्रुह्यन्ति ते ॥ The easiness of quoting a verse, fit to the preceding prose sūtra, the similarity of expression add to the suspicion that there is
