The last of these is only another nanie of Yasastilakachampū, for a full analysis of wnich a reference may be made to Dr. Peterson's II Peport, pp.33-49. The first three are not otherwise known. In the first part of the colophon above quoted Somadeva has been styled Tarkika-chakravarttin and hence a work by him on Nyāya may also be expected. In the Stotra. chatusthayaţikā Vidrānanda makes frequent references to and quotations from Dhyāna-paddhati of Somadera Suri. This may be another work by our author. What make Somadeva's works of a very great importance are the learning of the author which they reflect and the masterly style in which they are composed. The prose of Yaśastilaka vies with that of Bana and the poetry at places with that of Magha. The Nitiväkyāmrita is a sort of work second only to the lately discovered Artha-sästra of Chanakya, whom Somadeva very much imitates both in matter as well as style. From the colophon of Yaśastilaka we learn that the author wrote in the Saka year 881 (Siddhartha Saivatsara) during the reign of Krishnaraja III (of. Peterson's II Report, pp. 47-49 and 156).
Among the Kārañjá manuscripts a commentary "Sabdärnavachandrika" on Jainendra Vyakarana is mentioned as donc by Somadeva. But this Somadeva is to be distinguished from the author of Yasastilaka, as is evident from the following colophon of the work refered to:--
This proves that the author of Sabdarnavachandrika was a protégé of the Silāhāra prince Virabhojadeva, and wrote the work in the Saka year 1127 (Krodhana samvatsara ) A.D. 1049. The Vardhamāna-charita of this poet has been noticed,
and an extract from it published by Dr. Peterson in his IV Report, pp. 163-164.
