________________ THE AGREEMENT OF 1886, which was as follows: The Thakore Saheb of Palitaua agreed to receive and the Jain community to pay, a fixed annual sum of Rs. 15,000 in consideration of which the Palitana Durbar agreed that no further dues or pilgrim taxes of any kind will be levied from the Jains. This inclusive sum of Rs. 15,000 would be due on the ist of April of each successive year. The agreement was to last for forty years from the ist April 1886. After the expiration of these forty years, either party would be at liberty to ask for a modification of the fixed annual sum, and it would rest with the British Government, after considering the respective arguments of the contending parties, to grant or to withhold modification. In forwarding the agreement of 1886 for ratification by Government, Coi. Watson points out in paragraph 4 the purpose for which the authority was reserved to the British Government to grant or withhold modification of the fixed annual sum. He said: "As Government may possibly be unwilling to hereafter allow any enhancement of the sum now fixed, the power of making any modification in this fixed annual
