CHAPTER 19
THE TRUE SENSE OF WORSHIP
As said already in the previous chapter, the Jaina idea of worship is not that of idolatry, but merely that of imitating the God (Tirthamkara), to become in all respects like Him so far as divine attributes and powers are concerned. If I may coin & word, the Jainas are * Idealaters,' not idolaters. The true Christian idea of worship is identically the same.
"... Ye shall be holy : for I the Lord your God am holy..." Lev. six. %.
"For I am the Lord your God : ye shall therefore sanctify yourselves, and ye shall be boly; for I am holy ..."-Ibid. xi. 44.
"Because it is written, Be ye boly : for I am holy."-1 Peter 1.
16.
"He that sayeth he abideth in him ought bimself so to walk, even as he walked."-1 John il. 6.
"Wherefore awake, and take to yourselves our Lord and God, even that Lord who 18 Lord both of heaven and earth, and conform yourselves to His image and likeness, as the true Prophet Himself teaches, saying 'Be ye merciful, as also your heavenly Father is merciful.' ..."Luke vi. 36; (Recognitions of Clement) A.N.C.L. vol. in. p. 810.
"Imitate Him, therefore, and fear Him, as the commandment is given to men, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and Bim only shalt thou serve.' For it is profitable to you to serve this Lord alone, that through Him knowing the one God, ye may be freed from the many whom ye vainly feared ... But rather, by the good. Dess of Him who inviteth you, return to your former nobleness, and by good deeds show that you bear the image of your Creator, that by contemplation of His likeness ye may be believed to be even His song."-Ibid. p. 310.
