________________ The pleasure to-be. it is not, that is evidently the cause of of the world of distinctions and forms. If to be or not it is asked what was the root cause of the organism coming into existence, we must reply, "Itself." Who was the creator of the being ? Itself', is the ready answer we have to make in response to the question. Itself' is its own object and itself alone is its reason for existence. And, therefore, it has been well said that all the true reasons and transcendant motives a man can assign for the way in which he acts can be rendered into the simple formula “in that was my pleasure." And likewise is the case with the wherefore of the other things and beings. The highest philosophy brings us no other reply : beings and worlds are because it was their pleasure-to-be. To-be or not-to-be is but a matter of option for selfassertion, or otherwise wherein lies deep the primordial root of all responsibility. Now Time ( Fra ), the External Nature (स्वभाव), Necessity (नियति), Action (कम्म), and Exertion ( 39 ) whose natures have been just discussed in brief, speak for the differences and diversities in the world of forms 248
