AUTHOR'S PREFACE.
The history of Jainism in Gujarat is to & large extent an unexplored tract. This short work is intended to fill up & gap in the literature on the mediaeval history of Gujarat which has not taken adequate account of the unique contributions made by Jainism to the history and culture of Gujarat.
The present work was written under the guidance of Rev. Fr. H. Heras, S. J., Director, Indian Historical Research Institute, St. Xavier's College, Bombay, between 1943 and 1945. Its publication was, however, delayed partly by the conditions created by the war and partly by the needs of my teaching work.
A simplified system of transliteration of Sanskrit, Prakrit and old Gujarati words has been adopted in this work and may be understood from the following examples; Siddharaja, Kumārapāla, Devasūri, Chāhada. Current words and modern names are written usually without dia oritical marks.
