________________ ( 49 ) Poems. Abhinanda-kavya-(Ramacaritra) composed by poet Abhinanda at the instance of Yuvaraja Ilāravarṣa (a king of the Pala dynasty of Bengal) who is called the ornament of the dynasty of Dharmapala (765-829 A. D.) and born of Vikramasila. The last four cantos (37-10) of the poem are composed by Bhima, a Kayastha. Sukta-ratnākara-mahākāvya-by Manmathasimha, son of Vidyasimha and Vejalladevi-a collection of Suktas on various religi ous and ethical topics culled from various works; the first dvāra treats of religion; granthagra 4340. Udayasundari-katha is a prose romance written by Soddhala a Valmika Kayastha of Laṭadeśa (Broach) in emulation of Bāņa's Harṣacarita. The hero of the story is Malayavahana, a king of Pratisthana. The work, like Harṣacarita is divided into eight Ucchväsas. In the first Ucchväsa, the poet gives an account of the origin of his own community (Valmika Kayastha) from Kālāditya, a brother of King Siladitya of Valabhi, his on lineage and the circumstances which led to the composition of the work. The author was patronized by Mummuṇirāja, king of the Konkan. Kalidasa, Bāṇa, Bhavabhuti, Abhinanda, Vakpati and other poets are praised for their literary compositions. The present work being a fine piece of literary composition is an important addition to the Sanskrit works by the Brahmanical writers of Gujarat. It seems to have been composed either in the 9th or the 10th century A. D. The Pattan MS is the only MS of the work known at present. It seems to have been copied from a palm-leaf MS about Samvat 1480. Naranārāyaṇānanda3—a Mahākārya by Vastupala on the abduction of Subhadra by Arjuna. This poem deserves special attention, as it is the only Mahakavya by the famous Jain minister and that too on a Brahmanical topic.
