धर्माधर्मविवेकचारचतुरा वैश्याः स्मृता भूतले, ज्ञानाचारमहं पृथक्पृथगतो वक्ष्यामि तेषां परम् ॥ १० ॥
जो आत्म-ज्ञानका विकास करनेवाले हैं, व्रत और तप सहित हैं वे ब्राह्मण कहे जाते हैं । निराश्रय पुरुषोंकी भी जो रक्षा करते हैं वे क्षत्रिय माने गये हैं । और जो धर्म-अधर्मकी जाँच करने में प्रवीण हैं वे वैश्य होते हैं । अतः इनका ज्ञान और आचरण जुदा जुदा कहा जाता है ॥ १० ॥ सज्जनदुर्जनवर्णन |
सन्तो जना न गणयन्ति सदा स्वभावात, क्षुद्रैः प्रकल्पितमुपद्रवमल्पवत्को, दाह्यं तृणाग्निशिखया भुवि तूलमेकं तापोऽपि नैव किल यत्पुरतोदकानाम् ॥ ११ ॥
दुर्जनोंका यह स्वभाव है कि वे पृथिवीपर सज्जनोंके ऊपर कुछ न कुछ उपद्रव करते ही रहते हैं, किन्तु सज्जनोंका भी स्वभाव है कि वे उनकी जरा भी पर्वाह नहीं करते; प्रत्युत दुर्जनों को ही शर्मिंदा होना पड़ता है । सो ठीक ही है जो तृणोंकी अग्रिकी ज्वाला रुईको जलाती है वही जलके सामने लापता हो जाती है । सारांश यह कि यदि कोई दुष्ट हमारी इस रचनामें दोष दे तो भी हमें कोई पर्वाह नहीं है। दुष्टों के थोड़े भी उपद्रवसे क्षुद्र पुरुष ही ऊब कर अपने कर्तव्य-पयसे हाथ संकोच लेते हैं, पर महापुरुष तो अपने प्रारम्भ किये हुएको पूर्ण करके ही छोड़ते हैं, चाहे दृष्ट कितना ही उपद्रव क्यों न करें ॥ ११ ॥
गुणानुपादाय सदा परेषां सन्तोऽथ दोषानपि दुर्जनाश्च
गुणैर्युतानां गुणिनो भवन्तु,
सर्वे स्वदोषाः परिकल्पनीयाः ॥ १२ ॥
सज्जन पुरुष तो उन गुणी पुरुषोंके गुणोंको ग्रहण कर स्वयं गुणवान बन जाते हैं और दुर्जन पुरुष उनके दोषोंको ग्रहण कर दोषी ही बने रहते हैं ॥ १२ ॥
गृह्णातु दोपं स्वयमेव दुर्जनो, धनं स्वकीयं न निषिध्यते मया, गुणान्मदीयानपि याचितो मुहुः, सर्वत्र नाङ्गीकुरुताद्ध ेन सः ॥१३॥
वह दुर्जन मनुष्य मेरे दोषोंको स्वयं अपना ले। वे दोष उसका धन है, अत: मैं उसको अपने धनको अपनाते हुए मना नहीं करता; क्योंकि वह वार वार प्रार्थना करने पर भी मेरे गुणों को कभी स्वीकार ही नहीं करेगा ॥ १३ ॥
कविर्वृत्ति काव्यश्रमं सत्कवेर्हि, स्फुटं नाकविः काव्यकर्तृत्वहीनः,
यथा बालकोत्पत्तिपीडां प्रसूतौ न वन्ध्या विजानाति जानाति सूता ॥ १४ ॥
कवि ही सत्कविके काव्य के परिश्रमको पहचानता है । जो अकवि है - कविता करना ही नहीं जानता है— कविके श्रमको वह क्या पहचानेगा। जैसे प्रसूतिके समय बालककी उत्पत्तिसे होनेवाली पीड़ाका अनुभव बाँझ स्त्री नहीं कर सकती, किन्तु जो स्त्री पुत्र जनती है वही उस पीड़ाको जानती है ॥ १४ ॥

May the virtuous be endowed with virtues,
All their own vices should be considered. || 12 ||
Let the wicked man take my faults upon himself. Those faults are his wealth, therefore I do not stop him from taking his own wealth; because even after repeated requests, he will never accept my virtues. || 13 ||

A non-poet, who is incapable of composing poetry, cannot know it,
Just as a barren woman cannot know the pain of childbirth, but a woman who gives birth knows it. || 14 ||
