shaped like mount Meru While he gazed upon the cloud, it slowly dissolved This phenomenon brought home to him the truth of the instability of all things 1 He therefore desired to become a monk, and though his parents were at first against, the plan, he finally succeeded in obtaining their consent He was then ordained and converted many princes Persevering in his tapas, he was at last endowed with the Avadh knowledge (390-418)
Bhavadeva, descending from heaven, was re-born as Siva, son of Padmaratha, king of Vitāšoka in Videha, and Vanamālā When Śiva had grown up and been married, Sāgaradatta took up his residence near that town in the house of a rich merchant Kāmasamrddha whose hospitality was rewarded by a sudden influx of riches Sıva, hearing of this, visited Sāgaradatta and respectfully listened to his sermon He felt an unaccountable affection for the saint which the latter explained by relating the story of their former lives (419-434) Siva was now anxious to become a monk, but his parents stubbornly refused their consent He therefore tried to enforce his request by rejecting all food, and lived as a bhāvayatı But his parents secured the assistance of one of his friends, a merchant's son This man henceforth behaved towards Siva as if he considered him his Ācārya, and removed Siva's objections to cating anything by providing him with pure food collected by lumself (434-465) Thus Siva continued in his ascetic life for twelve years against the will of his parents At last he died and was born again as the god Vidyunmālın In seven days, thus Mahāvira concluded his narrative, he will be born in Rājagrha as Jambū, son of Rsabha (466-469)
