स्वामी समन्तभद्र।
हमेशा इस बातके लिये खुशकिस्मत x रहे हैं कि विद्वान् लोग उनकी वादघोषणाओं और उनके तात्त्विक भाषणोंको चुपकेसे सुन लेते थे.
और उन्हें उनका प्रायः कोई विरोध करते नहीं बनता था।-वादका तो नाम ही ऐसा है जिससे ख्वाहमख्वाह विरोधकी आग भड़कती है; लोग अपनी मानरक्षाके लिये, अपने पक्षको निर्बल समझते हुए भी, उसका समर्थन करनेके लिये खड़े हो जाते हैं और दूसरेकी युक्तियुक्त बातको भी मान नहीं देते; फिर भी समंतभद्रके साथमें ऐसा प्रायः कुछ भी न होता था, यह क्यों ?-अवश्य ही इसमें कोई खास रहस्य है जिसके प्रकट होनेकी जरूरत है और जिसको जाननेके लिये पाठक भी उत्सुक होंगे।
जहाँ तक हमने इस विषयकी जाँच की है-इस मामले पर गहरा विचार किया है और हमें समंतभद्रके साहित्यादिपरसे उसका अनुभव हुआ है उसके आधारपर हमें इस बातके कहनेमें जरा भी संकोच नहीं होता कि, समंतभद्रकी इस सफलताका सारा रहस्य उनके अन्तःकरणकी शुद्धता, चरित्रकी निर्मलता और उनकी वाणीके महत्त्वमें संनिहित है; अथवा यों कहिये कि यह सब अंत:करण तथा चारित्रकी शुद्धिको लिये हुए, उनके वचनोंका ही माहात्म्य है जो वे दूसरों पर अपना इस प्रकार सिक्का जमा सके हैं। समंतभद्रकी जो कुछ भी वचनप्रवृत्ति होती थी वह सब प्रायः दूसरोंकी हितकामनाको ही लिये हुए होती थी । उसमें उनके लौकिक स्वार्थकी अथवा अपने अहंकारको पुष्ट करने और दूसरोंको नीचा दिखानेरूप कुत्सित
