आपका विशेष अनुराग तथा प्रेम था और उसमें आपने जो असाधारण योग्यता प्राप्त की थी वह विद्वानोंसे छिपी नहीं है । अकेली ' स्तुतिविद्या' ही आपके अद्वितीय शब्दाधिपत्यको अथवा शब्दोंपर आपके एकाधिपत्य को सूचित करती है। आपकी जितनी कृतियाँ अब तक उपलब्ध हुई हैं वे सब संस्कृतमें ही हैं । परंतु इससे किसी को यह न समझ लेना चाहिऐ कि दूसरी भाषाओं में आपने ग्रंथरचना न की होगी, की जरूर है; क्योंकि कनड़ी भाषा के प्राचीन कवियोंमें सभीने, अपने कनड़ी काव्योंमें उत्कृष्ट कविके रूपमें आपकी भूरि भूरि प्रशंसा की है * । और तामिल देशमें तो आप उत्पन्न ही हुए थे, इससे तामिल भाषा आपकी मातृभाषा थी । उसमें ग्रंथरचनाका होना स्वाभाविक ही है । फिर भी संस्कृत भाषा के साहित्यपर आपकी अटल छाप थी । दक्षिण भारत में उच्च कोटिके संस्कृत ज्ञानको प्रोत्तेजन, प्रोत्साहन और प्रसारण देनेवालों में आपका नाम खास तौर से लिया जाता है। आपके समयसे संस्कृत साहित्य के इतिहासमें एक खासयुगका प्रारंभ होता है X ; और इसीसे संस्कृत साहित्य के इतिहासमें आपका नाम अमर है । सचमुच ही आपकी विद्याके आलोक से एक बार सारा भारतवर्ष आलोकित हो चुका है । देशमें जिस समय बौद्धादिकों का
