________________ २२ समीचीन-धर्मशास्त्र effectively; and above all the aim of theauthor is to guide carnestly the suffering humanity on the path of virtuc. This work is a solid basis on which are founded bigger Sravakacharas composed by many subsequent authors like Amrtachandra, Amitagati and Asadhara. No other text is more popular than the Ratnakarandaka in the Jaina Community. Not only Jainas but even non-Jainas have benefited themselves by the pious way of life presented therein. One cannot imagine a Jain temple, library or family without a number of Mss. or copies of this work. Its language is so lucid and clear that in the palmy days of Sanskrit no elaborate commentaries were needed on it. It is rather lately that Prabhachandra (c. 13th century A.D. ) wrote a modest Sanskrit commentary on it; there is an anonymous rendering of it in Tamil; and Ayatavarman wrote a Kannada Ratnakarandaka. Many commentaries in Modern Indain Languages, old and new, are found on this work, but the most popular is Pt. Sadasukhaji's Hindi Commentary, which has gone a long way to shape the pious life of many generations of Jainas, both in the North and in the South.
