III Method of editing :I A. comparative study of the seven mss. available to me showed that even though the main substance of the text is common it has considerable variations So the possibility of discovering the original text became remote. Under the circumstances, I adopted the following procedure in presenting this text.
Of the seven niss. D seems to be the oldest, though incomplete, while A, B. G. seem to belong to one proto-type. I have taken D as the basis of the text upto sūtra 85 and for the remaining portion of the text I have taken ms. A, which is next in age. The readings of D and A, however, have not been adopted in the text where they were corrupt or unsatisfactory. : Variants of other mss. have been noted in the footnotes.
In presenting the Vivarana, mss. A, B and G have been adopted ás the basis, because they together yield, on the whole a satisfactory text. Where, however, the readings of other mss. seemed better, they have been given in the text.
. As however, the different mss give at several places different informations, I have thought it proper to give below the main text, the texts of other mss, in full Thus the reader will have before him more or less complete texts of the Vivarana of all the miss
In appendix A, are given the additional Sūtras of ms. E as well as the old Gujarati Tabbo' contained in it. In appendix B similar matter gathered from some other works is given.
In the Index, I have included important variations from the texts of Vivaraņa given in the footnote.
