the composition of the original sitra to the beginning of the third centary. Therefore the date of the Nyayasutras will be more rocent than that of the Larkávatárasdtra. The earliest date we can assign to Vatsyâyana will therefore be the middle or end of the third century A. D., and in that case he will be somewhat earlier than Vasubandhu, which will explain Vatsyayana's reticence about the antagonistic theories of syllogism as propounded by Vasu. bandhu. Îśvarakļşņa' was influenced by Vatsyayana, and Dinnaga? actually criticised him. Vatsyayana quoted a passage from Kautilya's Arthashastra, and he criticised the Buddhist doctrines of momentariness, voidness and the idealism or the Vijñânavada. The acceptance of the proposed date for Våtsyâyana will harmonize all the known facts about the author and his contemporeries,
S'abarasvâmin.
250-300 A, D. S'abarasvåmin, the great Mimarså philosopher, and one of the pioneer commentators of the Jaiminiyasútras, is mentioned by our author, and is several times referred to and criticised in the Tattvasangraha. Dr. Ganganath Jha' believes him to be the father of Vikramaditya the founder of the Vikrama Era, on the strength of a tradition that S'abara had four wives of four different castes, and that Vikramaditya was born of the Kşatriya wife. But this does not seem to be correct. S'abarasvåmin refers to the S'anyavada and the Vijñânavada, and actually mentions the Mahayanikas' by name. Mahayana was very feebly represented in the Council
