extensively and stayed in temples during the rainy season. They collected a lot of manuscripts and other works of art which were deposited in the specially constructed vaults in the Jain Temples. The Jain Temples of Jaipur and Nagaur still have underground rooms which were used for preserving precious relics of art and literature. The Granth Bhandar of Amber was established by Bhattaraka Mahendra Kirti in 17th century. The Granth Bhandar of Nagaur dates back to an earlier period. It was established by Bhattaraka Ratna Kirti in 1524 A.D. The SRAVAKAS later took over the management of the Granth Bhandars from the BHATTARAKAS and JATTIS and made a notable contribution to their further development. The Granth Bhandars were well looked after upto the end of the 19th century. However, with the advent of the printing presses they began to be neglected. Sometimes the manuscripts in remained locked for years without any proper care.
In several Jain Temples of Jaipur and Nagaur the manuscripts. contained in the Granth Bhandars are entered in registers called GRANTH. SUCHI which contain the names of the manuscripts, their authors and the languages in which they are written. The manuscripts are placed :: either in cloth bags or in wooden boxes. These Granth Bhandars have : not been throughly surveyed sofar. In many cases, even their catalogues. have not been prepared and a few that exist are not prepared in a scientific manner.
The present volume which is a catalogue of important manus.... cripts preserved in the Granth Bhandars of Jaipur and Nagaur, is far from cxaustive. Among the preserved manuscripts in these Granth Bhandars are some 'dynastic chronologies, contained in such works as--- Tiloyapannati, Harivamsa Purana, Haribhadra's Avasyaka-Vriti. Titthogali Painnal and Mahapurana and in a number of later works like : Trilokasara, Parisistaparva, Tirthodhara-Prakarana etc. Some works, exclusively related to history have also found place in these, A manuscript called RAJAVALI preserved in the Pandya Lunakarn Jain Temple Granth Bhandar of Jaipur gives a history of the foundation of Delhi from the time of Anangpal when the city was called "Dhilli'. The manuscript gives information about the emperors who sat on the throne
