"स्तोष्याम्यहं पादिकमौदवाहिं ततः श्वोभूते शातनी पातनी च ।
नेतारावगच्छतं धारणिं रावर्णि च ततः पश्चात् संस्यते ध्वंस्यते च ॥"
In this connection I may suggest that it is not impossible for one and the same person to hold different philosophical views at different times in his life as was the case with Vasubandhu. As regards the metre, can it not be said that Mahābhāşya was written later than Chandańsūtra?
On comparing S'abara-bhāsya with Mahābhāsyat it definitely appears that the latter work was known to Sabara. So Patañjali is earlier than Sabara.
Some look upon Patañjali as an incarnation of Sesa. This may have led to his being identified with Seşanāga and
Pingalanāga.
Patañjali= Bhagvat-Patañjali He is the author of Yogasūtras". If he is identical with the eminent author of Mahābhāsya he belongs to the middle of the second century B. C. This identity has been however questioned on fairly reasonable grounds but by no means conclusive grounds.
1 Cf. Sabara-bhāsya on I, 1, 5 with Mahābhūsya on I, 1, 1 and that on
I, 4, 23 with Mahābhāsya (p. 23, Benares edn.). A portion of Mahābhâsya on 1, 2, 64 is criticized in Sabara-bhāsya on 1, 3, 33. Mr. P. I. Tarkas informs me that the Mahābhāsya on I, 1, 15 is quoted in Sabara-bhäsya on X, 2, 47.
From "The Mahābhāsya and the Bhäşya of Sabara" by Mahā. mabopādhyâya P. V. Kane published in Bhāratiya Vidya" (Vol. VI, Nos. 3 & 4, new series ) ve learn:
(i) fr a AFR: occurring in Sabara-bhāsya on VI, 7, 37 (p. 1503, Anandāśrana edn.) and attributed to 'abhiyakta' is taken from Mahābhāsya on VI, 3, 1 (Vol. III, p. 141 Kielhorn's edn.), and this "abhiyukta' is Patañjali.
(ii) The words गुणवचनानां हि शब्दानामाश्रयतो लिङ्गवचनानि भवन्ति and the illustrative examples. occurring in sabhara-bhāsya on IX, I, 33 (p. 1675 ) are an echo of what is frequently said in Mahābhāsya on pp. 228, 246, 410, 422, 430 eto. of Yol, I.
(iii) Kumārila in his Tantravārtika on III, 4, 13 (p. 926 ) says that in the words "आगमोऽपि चायमेव"विशेषणखेनेति" Sabara refers to the
position of the Vákyakāra (Katyāyans) and Bhāsyažära (Pata tjali). 2 Some of these sutras and their Bhāsya have been compared with TS
and its Bhāşya in my Sk. intro. (pp. 28-30 ) to TS (Vol. II). 3 See Wood's Yogasūtras and Daggapta's History of Indian Philosophy
(pp. 231-232).
