________________ xxviii How to perform "Suguru Vandana"? Beginning: Suguru Vandana Avanat mudra = Initial bowing of the head While reciting the first line (I wish, oh Kshama Shraman i.e. Jain monk, to pay obeisance to the best of my ability, giving up all other activities) stand and bow down the head half wayi.e. 'ardh shirshnaman.' Note: In a pratikraman, when instructed to perform any act in a standing position it is necessary to do so. However it is unfortunate that in current times, of the thousands who do pratikraman, 80-90% people do not bring along charavala with them and therefore perform all acts while remaining seated. (A charavala is a type of broom made up of woolen threads used to make one's sitting space free of subtle living beings. When one stands, it is necessary to use the charavala before sitting down again to ensure the space is made free of any living beings.)
