From the point of view of modes, the three characteristics (origination etc.) are mutually different from one another and are also different from the substance. From the point of view of substance, these three are not perceived separately from the substance. If a thing were permanent alone, there can be no destruction and origination, and impermanence would be negatived. If the soul were permanent (unchangeable) utterly, then transmigration of the soul as a man, a hellbeing and so on and liberation, the end of transmigration, would both be impossible. If it were transient alone, there can be no continuance and hence no permanence.
