incorporating homogeneousness and heterogeneousness, will be as follows: 1. “This hill is full of fire because it is full of smoke, just as in the kitchen.” 2. “This hill has no smoke because it has no fire, just as in the lake.” Fire and smoke abide homogeneously in the kitchen, and inseparable connection (vyāpti) between the major term (sādhya) and the middle term (hetu) is established. In the heterogeneous example, the connection is established by contrariety; the absence of the major term (sādhya) is attended by the absence of the middle term (hetu).
