________________ ESSENCE OF JAINISM - NON-VIOLENCE Avoiding Violence Jain monks and nuns either cover their mouths or even wear masks over their mouths while delivering sermon, so that they do not accidentally breathe any living things. Some Jain monks cover their mouths to prevent harming insects and other small creatures when they talk "Do not injure, abuse, oppress, enslave, insult, torment, torture or kill any creature or living thing."- Mahavira Non-Violence (Ahimsa) Jains know that it is impossible to live their lives and avoid harm to liv ing creatures. Simple acts such as walking down the street may hurt some small living beings and hence monks carry a cloth or feather broom with them. Jain monks and nuns are not permitted to stay in any one place and so walk from one place to another since they cannot use any means of transportations
