________________ JAINISM IN NORTH AMERICA THE NEW FRONTIER The documented story begins over 100 years ago in 1893 Virchand R. Gandhi, a young man with heavy black mustache Came to Chicago to participate the first Parliament of Worlds Religion His speech may be considered as introduction of Jainism in North America • 1904-05 Worlds fair in St Lois, Missouri, a carved wooden "Jain Temple" was displayed 1944 The first Jain settlers arrived in India 1948 10 Jain students arrived to USA for studies 1959 First assembly of Jains informally organized in New York and New Jersey area 1965 Jain center of America was establishedat New York. 1969 Jain Center of Metropolitan Chicago was established 1971 Gurudev Shri Chitrabhanuji arrived in USA at the invitation of Harvard University 1972 Dr. Dhiraj Shah fought against being drafted for the war in Vietnam and won right of any Jain to be not drafted against his or her wish based on religious convictions in Center of Greater Boston and Jain Society of Toronto was established 1975 Acharya Sushil Kumarji arrived in the USA 1976-1980 10 Jain Center were established in the US 1980 Firstedition of JAIN Directory of North America was published by Boston Sangh 1981 The First Jain Convention was held in Los Angeles and it was decided to form an umbrella body of all the Jain Organizations in North America 1983 Federation of JAINA was formally organized at a meeting hosted by JCA 1983-1993, 38 new Jain centers were established. Today there are 60 Jainor Hindu/Jain Centers in N.A. 1984 Aregular program of inviting visitor Jain Scholars from India was started by JAINA 1990 A Delegation fromNorth America along with leaders from other countries visited the Buckingham Palace with H.R.H. Prince Philip to issue JAIN Declaration on Nature authored by Dr. L M Singhavi 1990 JAINA Library with Over 4,000 books becomes fully operational in Lubbock, TX but has since moved to Jain Center of Southern California 1991 Siddhachalam, the Jain Teerth was established in NJ 1995 First Young Jains of America (YJA) Convention was held in Chicago 1996 Gurudev Chitrabhanuji's 75" Birthday celebrated at many Jain Centers across America 1997 Young Jain Professionals (YJP) was formed for networking. 1998 The First Pathshala Teachers Convention organized in 2002 2006 Ahimsa Center at Cal Tech in Pamona, CA was established under the leadership of Dr. Tara Sethia. 2007 A regular Sunday morning Jain TV program MANGALAM on TVAsia was launched • + Jains of North America made history on May 22, 2001 when Gurudev Chitrabhanuji Delivered the opening prayer in the US House of representatives In celebration of 2600" Birth Anniversary of Lord Mahavir Early in 2008 JAINA was granted consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations Today in 2008here are over 100,000 Jains living in North America 30 Jain Temples and 30 Hindu Jain Temples
