___ काव्य के 'रस' बताने से पहले टीकाकारों ने काव्य का अर्थ करते हुए कहा है-कवेरभिप्रायः काव्यं-कवि के कर्म, अभिप्राय या भाव को काव्य कहा जाता है। रस्यन्ते अन्तरात्मनाऽनुभूयन्ते इति रसाः-जो अन्तरात्मा के द्वारा अनुभव किये जाते हैं, किसी उक्ति, पद आदि को सुनने या दृश्य को देखने से हृदय में जो भिन्न प्रकार के भाव उत्पन्न होते हैं, उन भावों की अनुभूति अथवा उत्कर्ष-उद्रेक, रस है। काव्य शास्त्र के अनुसार स्थायीभाव जब विभाव, अनुभाव तथा संचारी भावों से परिपक्व होकर देखने, सुनने, पढ़ने वाले के हृदय को तरंगित/भव विभोर कर देते हैं तब वे 'रस' कहलाते हैं। आचार्य हरिभद्र ने चित्त की वृत्तियों को भी रस कहा है। जैसे वेदनीय कर्म के दो रस होते हैं, सुख और दुःख। इसी प्रकार काव्य के भी रस होते हैं।
प्राचीन काल से काव्य के नो रसों की ही मान्यता है। काव्यानुशासन में नो रसों का ही उल्लेख है। इसके पश्चात्वर्ती काल में 'वात्सल्य' और 'भक्ति' दो रसों को जोड़कर ग्यारह रस मानने की चर्चा भी मिलती है। काव्य शास्त्र में और प्रस्तुत आगम में रसों के नामों में कुछ भिन्नता है। जैसे कहा गया है
शृंगार-हास्य-करुणा-रौद्र-वीर-भयानकाः।
बीभत्साद्भुत शान्ताश्च नव नाट्ये रसाः स्मृताः॥ ___ जैन आचार्यों ने 'भयानक रस' के स्थान पर 'वीडनक रस-लज्जारस तथा शान्त रस के स्थान पर 'प्रशान्त रस' यह नाम परिवर्तन किया है। आचार्य मलयगिरि के कथनानुसार भयानक रस का अन्तर्भाव रौद्र रस में कर दिया गया है। काव्य शास्त्र में, व्रीडनकरस को स्वीकार नहीं किया है। आगे सूत्रों में नवरसों के सम्बन्ध में विस्तारपूर्वक वर्णन है।
Elaboration—The nine sentiments in drama or other literary works are-Shringar-rasa (amatory or erotic sentiment), Hasyarasa (sentiment of humour or comic sentiment), Karun-rasa (pathos or tragic sentiment), Raudra-rasa (sentiment of rage or fury), Vira-rasa (heroic sentiment), Bhayanak-rasa (sentiment of fear or horror), Vibhatsa-rasa (sentiment of disgust), Adbhut-rasa (sentiment of wonder), and Shant-rasa (sentiment of tranquillity).
Before stating the sentiments of poetry the commentators have defined poetry as—the work, intention, or feeling of a poet is called poetry. After that they define rasa (sentiment) as that which is experienced by inner-self. The act of experiencing, or enhancement in intensity of, the variety of feelings aroused by listening to some comment, poetic composition, or other statement or by looking at something is called rasa (sentiment).
