His wealth was much more than that of Anand and Kamdev. 9 He had eighty million goldcoins in his treasure, eighty million in 5 business and eighty million in residential set-up including (@ household. It was a custom in that period that the moneyin business, % ‘ in cash and in property was almostidentical. It is thus evident that S Chulanipita was an extremelywealthy person ofthat period. vs + At the arrival of Bhagavan Mahavir, Anand and Kamdev had given § a new direction to their way oflife by observing detachment and ©. restraint in their worldly activities and spiritual practices. The {& same thing happened with Chulanipita. When Bhagavan Mahavir reached Varanasi, Chulanipita also heard his sermon. He also S accepted vows of a householder and became a Shravak. No account (& g is available about his way of life before undertaking vows of a %% AS, householder. , < + One day he observed Brahmacharya (sex-restraint) and Paushadh Y vow. He was engaged in spiritual meditation in the & S Paushadhshala. At mid-night a demon-god appeared to disturb 6 him. With a sword in his hand, he told Chulanipita—“You discard the vows otherwise I shall pick up your eldest son and cut himinto ®& oe three pieces in your presence. Then I shall roast them in boiling oil in a vessel. Later, I shall throw the boiling meat of your son and his blood on you.” . + It was heart-rending situation but Chulanipita remained firm in his ‘ meditation and spiritual practices. It enraged the demon. He did the {& 9 same as he had earlier declared. It was a very dreadful and condemnable act.
