माधुकरी वृत्ति THE BUMBLE-BEE ATTITUDE
जहा दुमस्स पुफ्फेसु-जिस प्रकार खिले हुए फूलों से रस पीकर भँवरा चुपचाप चला जाता है, फूलों को किसी प्रकार का कष्ट नहीं होता और भँवरे की क्षुधा भी तृप्त हो जाती है। उसी प्रकार गृहत्यागी श्रमण किसी के भी आश्रित नहीं होकर गृहस्थ के घरों में सहज भाव से उपलब्ध निर्दोष भिक्षा की एषणा करते हैं, उसमें से थोड़ी-थोड़ी ग्रहण कर लेते हैं। इससे गृहस्थ को भी किसी प्रकार का कष्ट नहीं होता और मुनि की देहयात्रा भी चलती रहती है।
A bumble-bee sips nectar from flowers and drifts away; it satisfies its need without causing any harm to the flowers. This is known as the bumble-bee attitude. A shraman who has renounced the world adopts the same attitude. Without depending on any single person he visits numerous houses seeking proper food and accepting only a little at one house. This allows him to subsist without being a burden on any of the householders.
चित्र में ऊपर फूल का दृष्टान्त देकर मुनि की माधुकरी वृत्ति दिखाई गई है। गृहस्थ के घर के समान फूल है, मधुकर के समान श्रमण है।

The top half of the illustration shows the bumble-bee attitude and the bottom half the activity of a shraman. The house is like a flower and the shraman a bumble-bee.
