large, clean the place of stay if cluttered and place the needful if it is empty, reduce the flow of air if it is too airy and increase if it is stifling, mow the grass inside and outside the upashraya (place of stay), and uproot the grass to spread mattress. As the ascetic is austere (will not do anything himself), the layman will have to make bed for him.
Keeping this in mind a disciplined nirgranth (Jain ascetic) should resolve not to go to a feast (expecting to get the food cooked for the occasion), believing that any dinner organized for an occasion (like baptising, marriage and other such ceremonies) or after an event (like death) is a feast (with numerous faults). This is the totality (of conduct including that related to knowledge) for that bhikshu or bhikshuni.
विवेचन - संखंड की परिभाषा - 'संखडि' एक पारिभाषिक शब्द है । “ संखण्ड्यन्ते - विराध्यन्ते प्राणिनो यत्र सा संखडि: । " - जिसमें आरम्भ - समारम्भ के कारण प्राणियों की विराधना होती है, उसे संखड कहते हैं। (वृत्ति पत्र ३२८) प्रीतिभोज आदि में अन्न का विविध रीतियों से संस्कार किया जाता है, इसलिए भी इसे 'संस्कृति' ( संखडि ) कहा जाता होगा ।
संखड में जाने से निम्नोक्त अनेक दोष लगने की सम्भावना रहती है
(१) स्वादलोलुपतावश अत्यधिक आहार लाने का लोभ ।
(२) अति मात्रा में स्वादिष्ट भोजन करने से स्वास्थ्य की हानि । ( अगले सूत्र में बताया है | ) (३) जनता की भीड़ में धक्का-मुक्की, स्त्रियों का संघट्टा (स्पर्श) एवं मुनि वेश की अवहेलना । (४) जनता में साधु के प्रति अश्रद्धा भाव बढ़ने की सम्भावना |
( ५ ) श्रद्धालु गृहस्थ को पता लग जाने पर कि अमुक साधु यहाँ प्रीतिभोज के अवसर पर पधार रहे हैं, तो वह उनके उद्देश्य से खाद्य सामग्री तैयार करायेगा, खरीदकर लायेगा, उधार लायेगा, किसी से जबरन छीनकर लायेगा, दूसरे की चीज को अपने कब्जे में करके देगा, घर से सामान तैयार कराकर साधु के वास स्थान पर लाकर देगा; इत्यादि अनेक दोषों की पूरी सम्भावना रहती है।
