that ascetics should properly inspect pots before going out to collect alms. If he finds some being within, he should take it out and leave it at some safe place. He should wipe the pot clean of any dirt etc. and then only come out of the upashraya and enter the house of a layman.
विवेचन-इस सूत्र में भिक्षा के लिए जाने से पूर्व पात्र की अच्छी तरह देखभाल करना और झाड़-पोंछ लेना आवश्यक बताया है। ऐसा नहीं करने से आत्म-विराधना और जीव-विराधना दोनों ही होने की संभावना रहती है। वृत्तिकार ने बताया है इन दोषों के अतिरिक्त अन्य अनेक दोषों की संभावना भी रहती है। जैसे
(१) यदि पात्र फूटा हो, तो वह आहार-पानी लाने लायक नहीं रहेगा। लिया हुआ आहार निकल जायेगा।
(२) किसी धर्मद्वेषी व्यक्ति ने द्वेषवश पात्र में कोई शस्त्र, विष या अन्य अकल्प्य, अग्राह्य वस्तु चुपके से रख दी हो।
(३) कोई बिच्छू या साँप आदि जहरीला जीव पात्र में घुसकर बैठ गया हो तो आहार लेते समय अकस्मात् काट लेगा अथवा उसे देखे-भाले बिना गर्म आहार या पानी लेने से वह आहार-पानी भी विषाक्त हो जायेगा, जीव की विराधना तो होगी ही।
(४) पात्र में कोई खट्टी चीज लगी रह गई तो दूध आदि पदार्थ लेते ही फट जायेगा। अतः गृहस्थ के यहाँ प्रवेश करते समय और भोजन करना प्रारम्भ करने से पूर्व पात्र-प्रतिलेखनाप्रमार्जना करना सभी दृष्टियों से लाभप्रद है। (वृत्ति पत्रांक ४००)
Elaboration—This aphorism informs that it is essential to carefully inspect and clean a pot before setting out to collect alms. Not doing so is harmful to the self as well as other beings. The commentator (Vritti) informs that there are chances of many other faults besides these. For example
(1) If the pot is broken it is of no use for carrying food or water. The collected food would trickle or fall out. ___(2) Some antagonist could have furtively placed some weapon, poison or other unwanted unacceptable thing out of animosity.
(3) Some poisonous creature like snake or scorpion may have crept in and be hiding in the pot. While taking alms it might bite all of a
