भाषा-संयम एवं निर्भयता (१) हिंसक प्रश्नों का उत्तर न दे-अटवी आदि में विहार करते हुए साधुओं को मार्ग में सिंह, बाघ, ___हाथी, गाय, हिरण, खरगोश, सियार तथा अन्य पशु-पक्षी इधर से उधर जाते हुए दिखाई
दें; और (२) उनके पीछे आते हुए हिंसक, लुटेरे, शिकारी व्यक्ति यदि साधु से पूछे कि “श्रमण ! तुमने
इधर किसी सिंह, गाय आदि को जाते देखा है ? देखा हो तो हमें बताओ वे किधर गये?"
ऐसे समय में साधु उन्हें कोई उत्तर नहीं देवे। निर्भय होकर मौनपूर्वक रहे। (सूत्र १७१) (३) निर्भय रहे-अटवी आदि में विहार करते समय यदि चोर, लुटेरे इकट्ठे होकर साधु को देखकर
पूछे-"तुम्हारे पास यह क्या है ? तुम्हारा जो भी सामान है हमें दे दो। नहीं तो हम लूटेंगे।" ऐसी स्थिति में साधु अपना सामान एक तरफ रख दे और चुपचाप खड़ा रहे। किसी प्रकार
की दीनता आदि नहीं दिखाए। (४) अवसर जानकर उन्हें धर्म उपदेश दे सकते हैं। अथवा चोर, लुटेरों द्वारा लुटने पर नगर में जाकर किसी से शिकायत न करे।

DISCIPLINE OF SPEECH AND FEARLESSNESS (1) Avoid answers that lead to violence-While passing through
a jungle (etc.) an ascetic may happen to see lion, tiger, elephant,
cow, deer, rabbit, jackal and other animals moving about. (2) If some chasing bandits or hunters ask the ascetic, “Shraman!
Did you see some lion, cow etc. passing this way? If yes, tell me which direction they have taken ?" The ascetic should not answer such question. He should remain silent boldly.
(aphorism 171) (3) Be courageous-While passing through a jungle if thieves or
bandits gather and ask, "What is this you have ? Give all your belongings otherwise we will snatch them from you ?" In such situation the ascetic should place his belongings on one side and
stand silent. He should not feel afraid or humiliated. (4) If he gets an opportunity he may give them a sermon. He should
also avoid making a complaint against the thieves when he reaches a city.
