भगवान महावीर की विहार चर्या
१. श्रमण महावीर हेमन्त ऋतु के प्रथम पक्ष (मृगसर वदी १0 ) को दीक्षित हुए। उस समय उनके कंधे पर मात्र एक वस्त्र था। अपने स्वजन -परिजनों को छोड़कर वे क्षत्रियकुण्ड से विहार कर गये । - अ. ९, उ. १/१, सूत्र २५६

२. दीक्षा लेते समय भगवान के शरीर पर सुगन्धित गोशीर्ष चन्दन आदि लगा था। मधुमक्खी, भ्रमर आदि अनेक क्षुद्र प्राणी उससे आकृष्ट हो शरीर पर डंक मारते, खून पीते, माँस नोंच लेते। चार मास तक इस प्रकार का यह उपसर्ग चलता रहा।

३. भगवान आँखों को अपलक रखकर तिरछी भींत पर ध्यान करते । उन्हें देखकर भयभीत हुए लोग चिल्लाते, उन पर डण्डों आदि से प्रहार करते ।

४. भगवान को एकान्त में खड़ा देखकर कुछ कामुक स्त्रियाँ उनके सौन्दर्य पर मुग्ध होकर उनसे भोग प्रार्थना करतीं। तब प्रभु ध्यान में गहरे प्रविष्ट जाते ।

५. भगवान को ध्यानस्थ देख कुछ लोग उनका अभिवादन करते तो कुछ डण्डों से पीटने लगते। कुछ लोग उन्हें प्रसन्न करने वीणा आदि बजाते किन्तु प्रभु सबसे निरपेक्ष रहकर अपने ध्यान में स्थिर रहते । - अ. ९, उ. १, सूत्र २६२
BHAGAVAN MAHAVIR'S ROUTINE
1. Shraman Mahavir got initiated on Margsheersh Krishna 10th during the first fortnight of winter. At that time he had just a single piece of cloth on his shoulder. He at once left Kshatriyakund leaving behind his family and relatives. -9/1/1/256
2. At the time of renunciation the body of Bhagavan was anointed with goshirsh-chandan. Attracted by the fragrance numerous insects like bumble-bee rested on his body and pierced his body, sucked blood and tore flesh. This continued for more than four months. -9/1/257
3. Bhagavan gazed unblinking at a slanting wall. Seeing his staring eyes, people used to get terrified and abuse him and beat him with sticks.

4. Finding Bhagavan staying in solitude, lusty women were attracted to him and approached to seek his favours. He would then go deeper into his soul and get engrossed in meditation. -9/1/260
5. Seeing Bhagavan standing in meditation some people would greet him and others start beating him with sticks. Some even played Veena before him but Bhagavan remained untouched by all this and continued his meditation. -9/1/262
